Chapter 22

The sun was dipping near the western horizon when I pulled into Julia’s driveway. There was a brand-new hot pink Tesla with a black leather interior parked behind Julia’s Mercedes. I’d never seen a Tesla with those colors before and figured from the rhinestones I could see glittering from the steering wheel that whoever Julia’s guest was, they had had it specially painted and upholstered.

And whoever they are, they must be wealthy, I thought to myself when I spotted the pile of shopping bags in the tiny backseat.

I knocked at the front door, but when no one came to greet me, and finding the door unlocked, I let myself in. No one answered my call, but I heard music coming from upstairs. Butterflies danced in my belly as I closed and locked the door.

There was an empty envelope sitting on the stand just inside the door, with another full one beside it. The full envelope had my name scrawled across it in Julia’s elegant handwriting, while the empty one bore the name Serenity Steele.

My heart quickened when I saw the name, and the palms of my hands grew clammy and refused to stay dry no matter how much I wiped them on my pants. Inside the envelope with my name on it, I found the same amount Julia had given me last time, and pocketed it.

A high laugh drew my attention back upstairs, and I climbed the curving staircase with slow steps, my ears trying to identify the two voices I heard. Julia’s I could make out the closer I grew, but the other voice, low and throaty, I couldn’t place. It made my heart beat all the faster.

“Insane…” I breathed, as I rounded the corner of the short hallway and saw into Julia’s massive bedroom.

The women either noticed movement, or heard my whisper, because both turned to regard me with nearly identical smiles. Julia sat in a cream-colored silk robe with a champagne flute in one hand that she tilted in my direction. The silk robe hugged every perfect curve of her body, even showing the pebbled flesh around her large nipples. Then my eyes drifted to the stunning creature sitting in the padded chair beside her.

Serenity Steele, the Serenity Steele, the woman devoted to whom I had created an entire folder on my computer, sat sipping a glass of champagne. Her icy blue eyes traveled up and down my form as I stepped into the room. I could feel my jaw hanging open, and forced it closed as I smoothed my expression, but it was a struggle to keep my composure in the face of the actress’ flawless beauty.
